Critic's Notes

John Gilman - View From the Cellar, 90

"(Rioja “Reserva”- Bodegas Señorio de P. Pedro Peciña (Rioja Alta)) Bodegas Peciña’s 2016 Rioja Reserva is a fine wine that is quite black fruity in personality in this vintage. The wine reveals an aromatic constellation of dark berries, cigar ash, a nice touch of Rioja spices, coffee bean, a fine base of salty soil tones, woodsmoke and American oak. On the palate the wine is deep, ripe and full-bodied, with a lovely core of fruit, the start of velvety texture on the attack, a good foundation of soil, tangy acids, still some tannin and a long, complex and well-balanced finish that shows just a bit of backend heat."

(Rioja “Finca Iscorta” Gran Reserva- Bodegas Señorio de Pedro Peciña (Rioja Alta)) 2015 was a very hot summer in Rioja and the Finca Iscorta, single vineyard Gran Reserva reflects this in its full fifteen percent octane level. The wine still has impressive depth and complexity on the nose, but shows the influence of the torrid climactic conditions in its slightly roasted tinge to its aromatic blend of cassis, blackberries, roasted meats, coffee grounds, brown spices, campfire, a nice touch of soil and good old American oak. On the palate the wine is deep, velvety and full-bodied, with surprisingly fine balance for its octane level, a good core of black fruit, some buried tannin and fine length and grip on the complex finish. There is a touch of sur maturité to the profile of the wine, but this is really an excellent result for what was a challenging growing season. (Drink between 2025-2055)

"(Bodegas Hermanos Peciña Reserva Señoría de P. Peciña Red) The 2016 Reserva Señorío de P. Peciña is a blend of 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 2% Garnacha from the Sonsierra area in Rioja Alta. Aged for 36 months in American oak barrels, this garnet wine offers sour cherry, candied fruits and mushroom notes over an oaky layer, with hints of coconut and vanilla. Dry and supple on the palate, the faintly chalky texture leads to a compact flow. The 2016 is a terroir-driven wine. (Drink between 2024-2032)"

"(Bodegas Hermanos Peciña Gran Reserva Finca Iscorta de Peciña Red) The 2015 Gran Reserva Finca Iscorta de Peciña is a blend of 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano and 2% Garnacha sourced from the Labastida area in Rioja Alavesa. Aged for 48 months in American oak barrels, this deeply hued wine reveals enticing aromas of plum, cherry, bay leaf and thyme, with subtle hints of coconut and vanilla. On the palate, it offers a dry, creamy and plush texture, characterized by a chalky mouthfeel that lingers with a satisfying clinginess. This well-balanced red showcases a New World approach. (Drink between 2024-2035)"
